"Jean-Luc Godard and Pauline Kael Talk About the Movies"

That was the title of the event I attended at the Marin Auditorium in 1980. I brought along a tape recorder to document the talk. Over the years I had lost track of that tape, but today I found it at the bottom of a box. After I cleaned the mouse poop off it I digitized it and tweeked the audio a wee bit. It's tough because Godard is soft spoken and Pauline has got a good set of pipes on her. My advice is to use headphones with one hand on the volume knob.

This is fascinating. Thanks for posting it. Godard has such a dry wit.

I've added you to my friends list, hope that's OK with you.

Thanks for this. An interesting transcript appeared in Camera Obscura in '82, and was reprinted in a wonderful book called Conversations With Pauline Kael, edited by Will Brantley. I say "interesting" because reading it while listening to the mp3 offers a fine example of what writers are up against when they transcribe interviews, especially when one of the speakers is talking in a non-native language.

I wasn't aware it had been transcribed. I'll have to look it up. You may have noticed that towards the end a few things get clipped. Don't remember why. I may have been running low on batteries and I thouhgt Kael was more dispensible than Godard,

FWIW, in the book, the "debate" is listed as happening on May 7, 1981.

Thanks. I stand corrected. I should have waited a day to post it in honor of the anniversary.

just read that conversation in the godard interview book (from university press of mississippi) a few days ago ... godard just recently became one of my current obsessions, now beeing interested in exactly the things i hated about him before ... like it happens to me fairly often with the more important aquaintances in art. first creepingly surrounding the "maestro", mumbling "now let me lookagain at this pile o'crap just one more time, to see what i'm so pleasantly unenjoying about it" ...

I remember sneaking the tape recorder in, I think I had to sneak it in, can't remember. Any way I felt like a deadhead. I wonder if there is a network of people who trade godard tapes. "I got godard in englishtown, new jersey '77. Fuckin awsome. I'm glad I taped it because I passed out during the lecture. Woke up in my own puke. It was beautiful."

NATO takes over command of military operations in Libya

NATO is taking over command of military operations in Libya from coalition forces, world media reported Sunday.

The UN Security Council imposed the no-fly zone over Libya on March 17, along with ordering "all necessary measures" to protect civilians from Muammar Gaddafi's attacks on rebel-held towns.

The 28 NATO ambassadors met on Sunday to decide on further military plans in Libya.

The United States transfers command for a no-fly zone over Libya to NATO, while coalition forces will continue to protect civilian population from attacks by Gaddafi forces.

The military operation in Libya, codenamed Odyssey Dawn, has been conducted so far jointly by 13 states, including the United States, Britain and France.

NATO members decided on Thursday to assume responsibility for the enforcement of a no-fly zone in Libya, but could not agree on taking full command of all military operations in the country.

Meanwhile, leaders of the 27 European Union states on Thursday issued a statement saying the EU stood ready to assist in building a new Libya "in cooperation with the United Nations, the Arab League, the African Union and others."
